How to use a cross stitch chart?

Ok, it’s been YEARS since I did cross stitching. I just made my own chart with photoshop, but the thing is, I cannot remember how to use it!! What do I do? Put it under the fabric? Over it? Something else completely?
Please help!
Thank you ^^
That helps, but where do I put the chart so that I can sew the picture?

Well, each symbol on the chart equals one cross-stitch stitch, i.e. you have to find the centre of the fabric first and start from there. Make sure that the stitches are next to each other so that there are no gaps between them, and make sure that you make a full row of half cross stitches first and then complete the cross stitches by returning back, leaving the top stitches neat. The chart is like a map for your work, giving you the shapes and colour key.

As for the placement of the chart, I have a magnetic metal platform onto which I put the chart, and which I can keep on my desk or on my lap. I attach the chart onto its place by magnet ribbon. It’s very handy to do that because I can even follow the chart with the magnets by moving them along as I sew!
