A green wedding does not mean that the wedding dress and wedding decorations are green in color. It means that the wedding is environmentally friendly and in line with living green. There are ways to have a green wedding that looks great and is very romantic. And at the same time you may help save the planet that you want to share as a couple for a long time to come.
A wedding dress made of silk, organic cotton or hemp and vegetable dye are all natural and biodegradable. Try a second hand gown, or wear your mothers wedding dress. Since a wedding dress is only worn once, choose something that will last for your lifetime, but not until the year 3000.
Wedding invitations made of 100% recyclable paper are attractive and widely available. Some brides even choose to send their invitations through email, saving tons of money on paper invitations and saving trees in the forest. Organic flowers, grown locally are a great choice for the bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets; as well as the flowers in the church/temple or for the reception. Or simply skip the flowers, and adorn your tables with potted arrangements for your guest to take home.
Instead of a limo services, biodiesel vans are available that run on peanut oil instead of gasoline and look just as great while getting you to the wedding on time. And the wedding dinner can be completely organic if requested at some event venues. Even the hors d’oeuvres, wine and liquor can be organic; and some bakers specialize in organic wedding cakes. Wedding favors can be boxed in biodegradable materials, with organic almonds or organic confections.
Wedding celebrations account for 10 tons of greenhouse gas. That is a lot of destruction. Use natural candlelight, or soy candles, they are more energy efficient and provide a soft romantic glow at the wedding reception; while being completely organic and natural.
Some items you don’t want to do without, but are they worth it just to have a celebration. Instead of making the celebration totally about ourselves, we should think of the world and the bigger picture. There are eco-friendly or earth conscious versions of most wedding products. We can still have a romantic and grand day with all the elegance and memories if we go green.
Another way to keep with the green theme is to register for green gifts such as linens made with organic cotton and bamboo plates. Let your guests know the steps you have taken to plan your green wedding, and show them that your special event need not be harmful to the environment.
People often wonder if a green wedding is more expensive than a traditional wedding, but the answer is not really. Sure organic food and materials might be more expensive, but you save in other ways by using natural energy sources. You can off set the cost of going green by shopping around and finding the best deals.
