Cross stitch on Christmas Stockings?
Any advice on cross-stitching names into christmas stockings? I don’t want to cross-stitch the entire stocking.. i’m looking to get stockings that already have something on the bottom part, but have a plain top cuff that i can stitch names into. Do they have to be any special material? and what supplies do I need (I think there is a special material you stitch through, that dissolves off when you’re finished)? Thanks!
The traditional method is to use “waste canvas”. You can plain old graph paper, or some sort of harder-to-find dissolving paper instead. I just web-surfed and found a dissolving paper that can be computer-printed, hurrah! ’bout time!
You can either make yourself a chart or draw your intended stitches onto the canvas or paper. Pin or baste the canvas or paper to the plain cuff top and hand-stitch through the two layers. Afterward, remove the canvas or tear away the uncovered portion of the paper.
The canvas is heavily starched. Dampening it softenes the starch and allows the thread to be removed individually. With paper, dampen the *stitched* portion and leave the rest dry or it will be like picking out bits of damp facial tissue.
